The Read family’s loyal following praises the ‘personable’ staff, welcoming atmosphere and ‘outstanding’ food at this extended Victorian house in ‘delightful’, well-maintained gardens. Sit by the log fires in the comfortable sitting rooms. Most of the bedrooms have ‘wonderful’ views over Morecambe Bay. Take morning coffee and afternoon tea in the lounges or garden. In the evening, chefs Andrew Read and Mark Johnston cook four-course menus of classic English and French dishes (served between 6.30 pm and 7.30 pm). 2 lounges, dining room (Sunday lunch; open to non-residents). Free Wi-Fi, in-room TV. No background music; brass band concerts take place on the bandstand throughout the summer. ¾-acre grounds (croquet, loungers, tables and benches). Mile-long promenade at the bottom of the garden (bowling green, tennis courts, putting green; easy access to ornamental gardens). Parking.
