Good Hotel Guide Review

‘A fine example of a Good Hotel’, this 18th-century house has been run as a ‘friendly’ hotel by Stephen Bore and Angela and Adrian Hyde since 1992. It continues to win lavish praise from readers who come for the ‘attentive’ staff, ‘superb’ dinners and ‘relaxed, lived-in feel’. ‘We enjoyed a warm welcome from Angela, who is the perfect hostess. The attention to detail, with many individual touches, sets this hotel apart.’ The interior bursts with a wealth of stripes and florals; on cool days, a log fire burns in the drawing room. ‘Very comfortable’ bedrooms have fresh flowers, fresh milk; a good bathroom. Local produce and ‘expert flavour combinations’ feature in the restaurant, perhaps trio of Cumbrian lamb, dauphinoise potatoes, redcurrant jus; Goosnargh duck breast, butternut squash fondue, smoked duck croquette. ‘It is a fine dining experience for hearty appetites after days out in this lovely area.’ Breakfast has locally smoked kippers and home-made preserves. Dogs are spoiled with a ‘good doggie welcome’ and the run of the grounds, including a woodland boardwalk. (Mary Coles, David Boehm, James Banks)

Guest comments

'A fine example of a Good Hotel. We enjoyed the warm welcome and discreet attentive service from Angela, who is the perfect hostess. The attention to detail with many individual touches sets this hotel apart from many in its class. Chef's expertise with flavours and food combinations is very evident and it is a fine-dining experience for hearty appetites after days out in this lovely area. ' - Mary Coles - November, 2015
'Very friendly welcome for us and our dog. Very comfortable room and superb food. All staff very attentive. Most useful to be warned about the attacking buzzard across the field! ' - David Boehm - July, 2015
'Less than two years ago we adopted our neighbour's dog: the neighbour had terminal cancer, and he asks us to take care of his nine-year-old Jack Russell, Mick, when the inevitable happened. We are now into 'dog-friendly' holidays. We stayed at Overwater in June 2015 and it was the most peaceful, relaxed holidays we have had. Everything was perfect, warm, friendly 'lived in' feel to the hotel, excellent rooms, food, service, couldn't fault anything. ' - James Banks - June, 2015
'Love the place Isolated part of the Lake District. Rooms comfortable with lovely bathrooms. Adrians food as good as ever. The place welcomes dogs and we were beautifully looked after. Will be back!! ' - susan chait - May, 2014
'What a wonderful hotel. We were quite late arriving; Angela and her team couldn’t have been more helpful. The food is so good, as was our room. The perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of everyday life. ' - Martin and Anna Smith - August, 2013
