Good Hotel Guide Review

Overlooking Lake Windermere, Stephen and Lisa Leahy’s ivy-clad Victorian hunting lodge is ‘an enjoyable oasis’, say Guide readers this year. The atmosphere – ‘friendly, relaxed, not stuffy in the slightest’ – may be timeless, but changes have been afoot. Jake Jones, hailed as an outstanding young talent, is the new chef; his modern British menus place an emphasis on local ingredients. ‘We were given four amuse-bouche in the lounge, and a very good appetiser of curry-spiced carrot soup. The meal got better and better, through crab, duck, mackerel and beef, with an excellent sorbet in between. We liked the long, interesting wine list – there were plenty available by the glass.’ In the ‘very pleasant’ bedrooms, locally distilled damson gin accompanies the ‘stunning’ views over the lake or fells. ‘The stock of biscuits was replenished while we were at dinner – a nice touch.’ At breakfast, ask for a table overlooking the lake – a fine partner to the fruit, muesli and ‘crispy’ pastries; dark-roast coffee and leaf tea; eggs Benedict with a ‘well-seasoned’ hollandaise sauce. (Alasdair Adam, A and BB). This hotel is a member of Pride of Britain hotels.

Guest comments

'We were last at this hotel some 18 years ago, so we were interested to see how it had changed. Relaxation and walking beckonned. We had a smart, very comfortable and new suite (Buttermere). Staff are all excellent except for one slightly brusque waiter. Dinner was excellent and deserves the Michelin Star. Our only gripe is that, owing to expansion, space in the public rooms is very limited, which makes for tables close together in the restuarant and crowded lounge areas for pre-dinner drinks. ' - David Young - April, 2014
'We have been dining/staying at Holbeck Ghyll for some 15 years or so now and have nothing but praise for the way everyone is so welcoming and intent on making our stay seem special, which it always is. Attention to detail is always paramount and the chef and kitchen work wonders with the food. ' - Rosemary Garner - February, 2013
