Good Hotel Guide Review

Medical pioneer Sir Joseph Lister once lived in this 19th-century building steps from the top of Princes Street, but there’s nothing clinical about the voguish hotel that occupies it today. Steven Simpson manages for owner Nic Wood. With rich fabrics, bold patterns and ornate mirrors, colourful bedrooms have a touch of the baroque – though they’re supplied with amenities just right for today: bathrobes, a fully stocked minibar, filter coffee, unusual teas; home-baked shortbread to nibble on arrival. A major refurbishment is also under way. Order hotdogs and small plates in the laid-back Huxley Bar (a fine spot for people-watching); in the smart Kyloe restaurant, chef John Rutter specialises in prime steaks from top Scottish producers. Most surprising, perhaps, is the Edinburgh Gin Distillery in the basement. Take tours and classes during the day; come evening (Tues–Sun, 5 pm until late), the space morphs into the popular Heads and Tales bar and gin emporium, with a tempting menu of custom cocktails and small bites. 2 bars, restaurant (open to non-residents); private dining room. Lift. Free Wi-Fi, in-room TV (Freeview). Background music. Discounted parking at Castle Terrace car park, nearby. Children welcomed (special menu; iPad in restaurant; £35 charge for bed for over-4s). 11 bedrooms, plus 5 serviced apartments in adjacent buildings. Per room B&B from £135. Dinner £40. Closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day.
