‘The efficient and friendly staff are a great asset’ at this popular restaurant-with-rooms, say Guide inspectors in 2016. Occupying a 19th-century coaching inn on the ‘very quiet’ main street of a pretty conservation village, it is run by French owner/chef Fabrice Bouteloup and his Scottish wife, Alison, a wine expert. ‘We were warmly welcomed and shown to our room. Everything was spotlessly clean and inviting. Our bed had a billowy duvet; there were plenty of towels in the small, functional bathroom.’ Take pre-dinner drinks in the snug lounge; a convivial dinner (‘pleasantly noisy at times’) is served in an ‘attractive’ room ‘decorated with outdoorsy tools reflecting the rural surroundings’. ‘The menu is small – only four choices for each course – so you know it’s being freshly cooked. It was all very tasty – a broccoli-and-asparagus amuse-bouche with a bite of haggis; rabbit with pear and foie gras; a delicious pannacotta with rosewater jelly and blackberry sorbet.’ At breakfast, ‘we were immediately brought a pot of tea’; ‘there was lots of toast from home-baked bread, and home-made marmalade and raspberry jam.’
