Good Hotel Guide Review
From the watercolour paintings and home-made fruitcake to the woodland and garden dotted with ‘daffodils everywhere’, countryside charisma fills this gracious guest house on the edge of Crailoch Burn. It is run ‘in a charming manner’ by Susan and Robin Crosthwaite, who have ‘lovingly furnished’ their one-time farmhouse with antiques, books and ‘pretty extras’. Arrive to afternoon tea, then amble around the estate – black Labrador Monty may be your guide. In the evening, Robin Crosthwaite serves aperitifs by the log fire before a communal dinner; the hostess (author of A Country Cook’s Garden in South West Scotland) uses plenty of home-grown and locally sourced food in her ‘delicious’ daily-changing menus. ‘After the meal, we had a wonderful surprise when crossing the courtyard to our room: a magnificent, starry night sky.’ ‘Breakfast was served in the kitchen at a time to suit us; it was lovely to chat with Susan as she cooked. The table had been set with pretty crockery; there was everything you could wish for – garden fruit compote, home-made muesli, any cooked dish you could think of.’ More reports, please.
