Good Hotel Guide Review
When a world-class sommelier and a former hotel inspector open their own restaurant-with-rooms, expectations are high. ‘Consistently excellent’, Gérard and Nina Basset’s Victorian villa in the New Forest does not disappoint. ‘It uplifts the spirits with its warm welcome and its sunny, modern decor in Mediterranean colours.’ Wine devotees find much to like: an open cellar provides inspiration; regular tastings and wine dinners are held. Ask for a tour of the vaulted basement cellars. The Napa Valley–inspired restaurant is the right place for food and wine pairings. In the open kitchen, chef Gavin Barnes serves seasonal menus using local, often organic, ingredients. A characteristic dish: slow-roasted veal shin, confit shallots, savoy cabbage, truffle potato purée. Vegan and vegetarian options are genuinely creative: consider wild mushroom pithivier, roast celeriac, cèpes, broad beans. Afterwards, stay over in smart, ‘attractively furnished’ bedrooms well equipped with fresh milk, a capsule coffee machine, organic toiletries. (‘Quirky, too: several have a bath in the bedroom.’) Three on the ground floor have a patio garden; four have their own roof terrace.
