Good Hotel Guide Review

When a world-class sommelier and a former hotel inspector open their own restaurant-with-rooms, expectations are high. ‘Consistently excellent’, Gérard and Nina Basset’s Victorian villa in the New Forest does not disappoint. ‘It uplifts the spirits with its warm welcome and its sunny, modern decor in Mediterranean colours.’ Wine devotees find much to like: an open cellar provides inspiration; regular tastings and wine dinners are held. Ask for a tour of the vaulted basement cellars. The Napa Valley–inspired restaurant is the right place for food and wine pairings. In the open kitchen, chef Gavin Barnes serves seasonal menus using local, often organic, ingredients. A characteristic dish: slow-roasted veal shin, confit shallots, savoy cabbage, truffle potato purée. Vegan and vegetarian options are genuinely creative: consider wild mushroom pithivier, roast celeriac, cèpes, broad beans. Afterwards, stay over in smart, ‘attractively furnished’ bedrooms well equipped with fresh milk, a capsule coffee machine, organic toiletries. (‘Quirky, too: several have a bath in the bedroom.’) Three on the ground floor have a patio garden; four have their own roof terrace.

Guest comments

'We knew Gerard and Nina from the days of Hotel du Vin in Winchester, so know that the hotel, and especially the wine, would be good. We were peased with both the rooms we stayed in. A lot of care had been taken in the furnishing, and were delighted to find that we each had a bedside light that you could actually read by. Dinner was very good and it certainly pays to get Gerard to recommenda wine to go with the meal. Gerard and Nina and staff are very welcoming hosts. ' - Margaret & Patrick Filsell - October, 2016
'Simply put, it's a gem. We find it consistently excellent ' - Richard Barrett - July, 2014
'This hotel is special and deserves its Cesar award. It uplifts the spirits with its sunny modern decor in 'm=Mediterranean' colours, and the warm welcome of the staff. Our stay was further enhanced by the delicate flavours of the food, complemented by the wine from an extensive selection. One of us with dairy intolerance was impressed as soya milk was already in our room on arrival. The menus were also cheerfully adapted including specially baked dairy-free bread, The rooms are attractively furnished if somewhat quirky - several have a bath in the bedroom. ' - Jane Bailey - February, 2013
