Good Hotel Guide Review

‘Everything is exquisite’ at this ‘very welcoming’ country house retreat (Relais & Châteaux), where goldfinches, song thrushes and blackbirds flit about the ‘beautiful’ grounds leading to a vast bird reserve. Queen Victoria once owned the 16th-century manor house and cherished its gardens. Following the death of Joan Reen, it has been turned by new owners,John and Jennifer Talbot, into a restaurant-with-rooms open five days a week. Each of the ‘comfortable’ bedrooms has its own character, with an ‘opulent’ four-poster here, an antique brass bedstead there. For extra space to lounge about, choose a garden suite with a patio and views of the gardens and mountains. Walking country surrounds: stomp about the rugged Cambrian ridges, or head for Borth beach, then return for Gareth Ward’s ‘superlative’ Michelin-starred tasting menus, which might include wild duck, salt pear, shiso; scampi, black garlic, rhubarb. ‘We simply murmured in delight as we ate,’ on fan wrote.

'Same as usual, all spot on. Everything is exquisite. Expensive mind. ' - Richard Morgan-Price - October, 2015
'We very much enjoyed a three-day break at this hotel. Beautiful setting in lovely countryside, comfortable room and very welcoming staff. Liked that we were treated like grown-ups, proper coat hangers, and none of those irritating notices about not stealing the bathrobes. A few quibbles - but they were minor and didn't detract from our stay. No tea- and coffee-making in the room - then to charge £8 for a pot of tea for two, not even a biscuit - a bit steep. Poor lighting in the bathroom. The highlight for us was superlative food - some of the best we've ever had- a tasting menu full of wonderful bursts of flavour ' - Frances Thomas - November, 2014
'A pretty house in stunning grounds.Large, helpful staff. Good to see the owners around. Our room, Matisse, was OTT (lots of pink) but fun though the heating was erratic. Very elaborate meals, leisurely pace, but the menu didn't change in two days. Bird sanctuary very rewardiing. ' - C E - May, 2012
