Good Hotel Guide Review

‘Tasteful refurbishment’ has given a ‘fresh seaside look’ to Martin Barlow’s ‘super’ hotel, says a returning visitor in 2016. But the 18th-century manor house retains ‘old-fashioned’ aspects – visitors are encouraged to dress up for dinner and embrace the occasion. Roundly praised is the ‘slick’ service: ‘There are always staff on hand.’ Choose from ‘well-appointed’ traditional or modern bedrooms, each ‘spotlessly clean’. ‘Our spacious room had everything we needed, including robes and slippers.’ There’s much to see and do: stroll to Helford Passage through the hotel grounds; sit next to the ‘welcoming’ open fire by the heated pool; sail down an ‘idyllic’ stretch of the water. ‘Our highlight was a terrific Helford river cruise in the hotel’s small boat. Roger, the skipper, is a mine of information.’ Come dinnertime, sit down to Darren Kelly’s daily-changing four-course menu of ‘excellent’ modern dishes, including ‘plenty of fish’, in the formal restaurant. ‘A very good pianist entertained us each night.’ (Mary Coles, Anthony Bradbury, Suzanne Lyons)

Guest comments

'We returned to this hotel after a three-year break to find the old-fashioned atmosphere, as some describe, to have been replaced by very tasteful refurbishment giving a fresh seaside feel without spoiling the style of the building. More refurbishment is to follow but most people return to this hotel as we do for the wonderful service excellent food, beautiful location with so much to do on the doorstep along with amazing facilities for active people and at such a competitive price not yet found elsewhere. ' - Mary Coles - June, 2016
'This hotel grows on you. Initially it seems a touch staid though it clearly does its best to lower the average age with its golf package and spa and swimming pool facilities. Perhaps the jacket and tie rule (which was almost entirely universally observed) should be relaxed to encourage the youngsters to come. [The hotel tells us that this rule has now been relaxed.] The room in the latest modern wing was fine apart from the time it took for any waterto emerge from the taps. Our bed was made during breakfast which always denotes slick service, and indeed service was commendably fast at all times - there were always well-trained staff on hand and in the dining room, Our highlight was a Helford river cruise in the hotel's small boat. We were the only passengers with the skipper Roger, and he was a mine of information and knowledge. We were taken the length of an idyllic quiet stretch of water - Frenchman's Creek . Two hours on the water cost just £40. Terrific. ' - Anthony Bradbury - October, 2015
'We very much enjoyed our stay. There were 11 of us to celebrate two 8Oth birthdays. The staff, the ambience, the gardens and the facilities were excellent and the food was very good. ' - Alice Sennett - August, 2014
