Good Hotel Guide Review
In the heart of historic Penzance, there’s ‘great fun’ to be had at Justin and Charlotte Salisbury’s Grade II listed 17th-century Georgian house, say trusted Guide readers this year. ‘Lively’ and bright, the modern hotel, standing on a narrow street leading down to the sea, has character in its vintage touches, eccentric finishes and great walls of ‘intriguing’ artwork. Organic toiletries and a Roberts radio come as standard in the vibrantly decorated rooms. ‘Our medium Arty room – fairly snug, but fine for an overnight stay – was a vivid peacock blue, with leaves of gold. There was a comfortable super-king-size bed with good linen and pillows; a shower room with plenty of space for toiletries.’ There’s a choice of eating places in town, but pop in to the ‘informal’, ‘quirky’ Cornish Barn restaurant: ‘undoubtedly popular’, it has ‘tasty’ sharing plates, and meats straight from the smokehouse. Coffees, cocktails and Cornish ales and lagers are found in the new bar/lounge. The Salisburys also own an Artist Residence in London and one in Brighton (see main entries). Bar/lounge, Cornish Barn restaurant. Conference room. Free Wi-Fi, in-room TV (Freeview). Background music. Small courtyard garden with bar, table tennis and table football. Children (cots, but no bedding supplied; charge for over-3s) and dogs (in 2 ground-floor rooms; £10 charge) welcomed. 10 mins’ walk from railway station; 5 mins’ walk from seafront. 19 bedrooms, 2 apartments, one 3-bedroom cottage. Per room/apartment B&B £79–£280. Dinner £20–£25.
