Good Hotel Guide Review
Cheery pots of herbs or flowers welcome guests to this refurbished Victorian pub, in a pretty village on the edge of Cranborne Chase. The focus on updated British cuisine remains: in the ‘enticing’ dining area, or in the terraced garden on fine days, choose from menus rich in game and other local meat and produce. ‘Pleasing’, ‘restful’ bedrooms have a charming country feel, with pale colours, well-picked antiques, home-made shortbread and a selection of books; each is brought bang up to date with a flat-screen TV, all-natural bath products, fancy teas and an espresso machine. Most are in the main house, up a ‘steep, narrow’ stairway; some, in the former coach house, are steps away on a gravelled path (umbrellas provided). Get the day started with fresh orange juice and ‘proper’ toast at breakfast. Popular with shooting parties – the Ashcombe and Rushmore estates are moments away. Lounge, bar, restaurant. Free Wi-Fi, in-room TV. Garden (outdoor functions; music licence). Parking. Children and dogs (by prior arrangement) welcomed. 6 miles W of Shaftesbury. 8 bedrooms (some on ground floor, 3 in coach house). Per room B&B from £90. Dinner from £20.
