Dunvalanree in Carradale

‘What a great place. It has those extra touches that make a special experience; we felt really welcome.’ This year’s praise for Alan and Alyson Milstead’s restaurant-with-rooms in an Edwardian house on the Mull of Kintyre, overlooking the golf course and sandy Port Righ Bay. Home-made shortbread in the room proved ‘positively addictive’ to one visitor. ‘Bathrobes, binoculars and a guest folder to help you plan days show real thought for guests.’ The bedrooms are individually furnished and decorated. Two at the back share a bathroom and are ideal for a family. ‘The highlight was the food; quality ingredients blended by a talented cook; it was not simple stuff done well, it was clever, interesting food, excellently cooked.’ At 7 pm guests gather for drinks while Alan Milstead plays ‘ebullient’ host; his wife cooks a daily-changing menu, using local fish, shellfish and farm produce. The meal is a leisurely affair, served in a dining room overlooking the cliff-top garden and sea. At breakfast eggs are from the Milsteads’ own hens. ‘A great spot, handy for ferries to the islands.’ (Jim Naismith)
  • What a great place. It has those extra touches that make a great experience. Home-made shortbread in the room that was positively addictive! towels that were beautifully crisp and clean. The highlight was the food, local quality ingredients blended by a talented cook, wonderful tastes. It was not 'simple' stuff done well, it was clever, interesting food excellently cooked. I can't remember enjoying food in any hotel more than I did here. We felt really welcome. A great spot and handy for ferries to the islands.

  • A very special place with hosts who go out of their way to offer something different. The homely comfort and attention to detail is exceptional and yet it all seems effortless and unpretentious. The location is stunning; the food outstanding.

  • We had a throughly relaxing time at this beautiful hotel in its remote and picturesque location. Our four nights were over too soon. The hosts, Alyson and Alan, were very welcoming. Alyson's cooking was superb and Alan's knowledge of whisky was encyclopedic. A bolt hole to escape the hustle and bustle of every day life. After breakfast put your boots, leave your car in the car park and just walk working up an appetite for the evening of great food followed by conversation in the lounge.

  • Exceptional hotel with gorgeous rooms and beautiful quiet setting. Food was wonderful and Alison was able to cater for my food intolerance with panache. Personal touch from the hosts makes this one of the most enjoyable hotels we have ever stayed in.

  • Comfortable room. Lovely house. Great views. Stunning location. Welcoming hosts. Water system in neighbouring rooms noisy. Food satisfactory.
