‘A four-square Scottish dwelling house’, William and Sonia Marshall’s Victorian granite villa is set back from the road next to woodland, a stroll from the centre of the Speyside town. The owners take ‘tremendous pride’ in their hotel, and ‘should be congratulated for the warmth, welcome and quality’, says a visitor. Open fires burn in original marble fireplaces. The style is traditional, with the atmosphere of a lived-in home – sofas, books, clocks, ornaments. Each of the ‘excellent’ bedrooms is individually furnished; the bathrooms are ‘pristine’. In the evening, guests are given amuse-bouche with drinks in the lounge. Sonia Marshall is the cook, serving a daily-changing menu of seasonal dishes, perhaps warm leek and Stilton tart, pear dressing; saddle of Morayshire lamb, port and plum jus. Breakfast has ‘generous servings of coffee’, a small buffet; ‘good’ cooked options include an ‘excellent’ kipper. For a post-dinner drink, William Marshall can offer an extensive selection of single malts and single cask whiskies (there are 50 distilleries within 25 miles of Culdearn House).   • Probably the best small hotel we have visited. The very hands-on owners gave us a warm welcome. The bedrooms are spacious, extremely comfortable and very well appointed. The public rooms are comfortable and well decorated. The food is superb (both dinner and breakfast). Very convenient for owners with dogs as there are large woods opposite.

  • A comfortable four-square Scottish dwelling house. Warmly welcomed by William and Sonia and offered tea on arrival. Excellent rooms. Ours, at the side of the house, was immaculate; beautiful wall paper and wall hangings, an immaculate bathroom. It was clear that William and Sonia took enormous pride in their hotel/home and they deserve many congratulations for the standard of cleanliness and tidiness. Guests assembled for pre-dinner drinks in the sitting room around 1900, a nice opportunity to chat. Dinner is four courses for £40; I would have preferred the option of having just two or three courses at a reduced price. The food is very good although not fine dining. Breakfast buffet slightly dull but good cooked breakfast. William and Sonia seem never to go away, so this must be a labour of love. They should be congratulated on the the quality of their hotel. A very well run and caring operation.
