Viewfield House

A relatively modest Georgian house appears today as a Victorian extravaganza thanks to the present owner’s great-grandfather. On his return from planting indigo in India, Harry Macdonald called in Alexander Ross, architect of Inverness Cathedral, to extend in all directions. Although not on cathedral proportions, several of the rooms are huge. The mansion has passed down to Hugh Macdonald, who creates the feeling of a house party (if you want a drink, ask for it; there isn’t a bar). ‘Fabulous, one of the nicest places we stayed on our visit to Scotland,’ said a visitor from America this year, who appreciated the use of washing machine and drier. Walls bristle with antlers. Ancestral portraits look down. Log fires blaze. Public rooms are adorned with mementoes of the Raj. Portree is the capital of Skye, but the house stands quietly in wooded grounds with views of Portree Bay. ‘You can walk into town.’ Evening meals, by prior arrangement, are ‘fantastic’. Breakfasts are hearty, with a good choice of cooked eggs, bacon, fish, as well as a cold buffet. (Beth Parks)
  • Fabulous, one of the nicest places we stayed on our visit to Scotland. Cozy and fantastic meals. Also had use of a washer and dryer which was a great help and you can walk to town.

  • Everything I'd wished for on Skye - a beautiful room with view of Portree bay, delicious meals, attentive and charming hosts and staff in an elegant and historic country house. A place you can confidently recommend for comfort and value.

  • Vomfortable, and a nice atmosphere. We got the feeling of being an old Scottich king! A perfect stay to discover Skye.
