Toravaig House

‘Gloriously’ positioned, with views of the Sound of Sleat and ruined Knock Castle, this whitewashed hotel is owned by Ken Gunn and Anne Gracie. A master mariner, he offers guests trips aboard his yacht, Solus a Chuain (Light of the Ocean), to the islands of Rhum and Eigg. A visitor this year received a friendly welcome at reception. ‘Our room, Colonsay, was of a generous size; nicely decorated’; it had a bay window with a sea view; the bathroom, with a good shower, was ‘slightly cramped’. Public areas are smart, comfortable and contemporary. There is a marble fireplace with open fire in the ‘lovely’ drawing room. A new head chef, Findlay Wood, serves a short daily-changing menu of modern dishes like scallops, wild garlic linguine, confit lemon, roast chicken sauce; Black Isle beef fillet, carrot, banana shallot tart Tatin, horseradish, red wine. The background music at dinner and breakfast was found ‘annoying’. Freshly cooked dishes in the morning include Mallaig kippers, Skye smoked salmon, French toast with berries. Duisdale House nearby (see Shortlist) is under the same ownership.
  • A restful stay in a pleasant house with large garden, much of which needed attention. Decking for good weather and fine views across Skye. The beds were comfortable; good linen and reading lights. Our small side room had a pleasant hillside view The bathroom, was modern and clean but so small it was impossible to dry yourself. The dining room service was excellent both at dinner and breakfast, but we thought the dinner over-priced. Small portions. Housekeeping standards are high throughout, and the public rooms are decorated to a high standard and very comfortable. Breakfast was most enjoyable and relaxing, and service until 10am much appreciated
