Duisdale House  (Shortlist*)

In extensive gardens and woodland on the Isle of Skye overlooking the Sound of Sleat, Anne Gracie and Ken Gunn have fashioned a small, hospitable hotel from a former Victorian hunting lodge; they also own Toravaig House nearby (see main entry). Modern bedrooms are decorated with bold prints and swirling wallpaper; some overlook the gardens or loch; others have views of the Highlands beyond. Traditional dishes, using seasonal produce from Skye and the Highlands, are served in the restaurant; the Chart Room is a relaxing place for pre-dinner drinks and casual dining. Afternoon tea is taken by the log fire in the lounge or outside on the south-facing deck. From April to September, guests may book days out on the hotel’s luxury yacht, with lunch and champagne included (whales, dolphins, seals and seabirds optional). Lounge, bar, restaurant, conservatory. Free Wi-Fi. Background music. Weddings. Parking. 35-acre grounds (10-person garden hot tub). Children welcomed. 18 bedrooms (2 family rooms; 1 garden suite suitable for disabled). Per room B&B £210–£338. Dinner £45.
