‘There is nowhere else more calming’ than the ‘magnificent’ grounds of Susie and James Suter’s sporting hotel by the River Usk, a long-time visitor says. The 19th-century Italianate building stands in ‘beautiful’ gardens that ‘add to the magic of its setting on the bluff’ over the river. It is popular with fisherfolk who enjoy a private stretch of the trout- and salmon-laden waters. Overlooking the garden or the river, ‘immaculate’ bedrooms are individually decorated, with charming touches: a superior room has a wisteria-covered balcony; a smaller standard room has its original Delft-tiled fireplace and plenty of books. Four garden-view rooms are in a cottage across the lawn from the main house. In the restaurant, Karl Cheetham’s ‘excellent’ dinners use local produce, perhaps British rose veal tagliata, gnocchi, asparagus, pancetta. Special diets are catered for: ‘Every member of staff was aware of our needs and the chef ensured that all the menu options were accessible to us.’ At breakfast, a buffet table has freshly squeezed juice, home-made muesli and freshly baked pastries; cooked items include Welsh bacon and sausages. • Our 12th stay. It never fails to please. A most enjoyable place, and value for money. The food is first class. Every consideration given by friendly and helpful staff.

  • A very nice hotel. We had a comfortable room at the front above the kitchen, which resulted in some cooking smells pervading the room and it could be a bit noisy late at night as people came and went. That said, it was 29 degrees and all windows were open. The food was good and plentiful. One day we had an excellent packed lunch. The River Usk runs through the grounds and I availed myself of a pleasant and productive evening fishing. The staff were all efficient and friendly, a credit to the hotel

  • Isn't it wonderful to open the GHG and spot a hotel just where you need to break your journey? It's even better when the hotel turns out to be perfect. First ,the beautiful setting in the hills with the River Usk below. Then, the warmest of welcomes by the receptionist who seemed genuinly pleased to see us. All the staff were effecient, well trained and delighted to serve us, and the warmth of their welcome matched the roaring log fires in the enormous fire places. The spacious, beautifully designed public rooms are decorated and furnished to the highest standards. We paid extra for a large twin bedroom which had comfy armchairs as well. The dinner was magnificent, even if only four mains to choose from.
