Good Hotel Guide Review

Guests roundly praise the ‘professionalism and charm’ of the Downs family’s ‘brilliant’ country house hotel. The Victorian pile stands in ‘lovely manicured parkland’ on the edge of the North Yorkshire moors. Within, the ‘dedicated’ staff are ‘unstarchy’, ‘friendly’, ‘extremely attentive’. Downstairs, find swagged curtains, prints of famous paintings, ‘comfortable’ sofas and armchairs. Traditionally decorated bedrooms are individually styled. ‘Our spacious room had beautiful blue chintz on the walls and bedding, plus a decanter of sherry along with the usual coffee and teas – wonderful.’ Book a room with a spa bath for ‘a fabulous foam soak of Hollywood starlet proportions’. Beds are turned down in the evening; set your shoes out for an old-fashioned shine. After ‘unusual’ canapés and pre-dinner drinks, sit down to a ‘delicious’ dinner, perhaps of hand-dived scallops, sweetcorn purée, Yorkshire chorizo, pickled leeks; fillet of dry-aged beef, pressed potato, Wye Valley asparagus. At breakfast, ‘the view over the park – its trees in blossom, the squirrels on the lawns – is delightful’. ‘It was just like a home away from home, only better.’ (FW, Lesley Hutchinson, Alan Bates, Gillian Caldwell). This hotel is a member of Pride of Britain hotels.

Guest comments

'A long, smooth driveway through manicured parkland leads to the imposing front entrance of this fine country house hotel. Cheerful girls front the reception. The friendly Turkish restaurant manager appeared and took our cases. Our sumptuous room was spacious, with a deep sofa, wide two-seater armchair facing the wide flat-screen TV. There was milk in a fridge for tea/coffee making, fresh fruit, sherry, etc. The bed, on a raised dais, was huge. The modern bathroom was large, well lit, immaculate. The free Wi-fi, worked well. There are lots of comfortable sofas and armchairs in the lounge. The service throughout, by un-starchy staff, proved exemplary both at dinner and breakfast. The dinner menu was interesting and the cooking was excellent. In the morning the view from the conservatory was delightful. A good cooked breakfast was served by an affable local lady who has been with the Downs family for over 20 years. ' - Francine and Ian Walsh - April 2015
'Great hotel, beautiful grounds, friendly staff and good food. Very enjoyable visit ' - john speight - October 2014
'Lovely to be back at Judges after 2 or 3 years absence. We were hoping that the standards were as good as our previous visits and we were not disappointed. We had our usual comfortable room - minus the goldfish unfortunately - the food and service in the dining room was excellent. The quality and presentation of the dishes was of a high standard. Breakfast also was served promptly. We have not got a bad word to say about this hotel - they have never let us down. ' - William Wood - November 2013
'Had a fabulous weekend here. Our room was lovely - four poster bed and jacuzzi bath. Some nice little touches including complimentary sherry, chocolates, fruit and homemade biscuits. The food was superb - we had canapés each evening followed by three delicious courses. Breakfast was equally as good. The staff were polite, helpful, friendly and extremely attentive. ' - Gillian Caldwell - January 2015
'This is an outstanding hotel, with accommodation, meals, facilities, and staff all to a very high standard. The meals are a gastronomic experience from start to finish. For a relaxing, away-from-it-all break, this hotel cannot be faulted. ' - Adrian Robson - May 2014
