Good Hotel Guide Review
A hotel that ‘lifts the spirits’ – with regular wine tastings and cellar tours to raise them even higher – the Bassets’ Victorian villa on the edge of the New Forest is an oenophile’s delight. Gérard Basset is an award-winning sommelier, Nina Basset, a former hotel inspector; their combined talents are evident in the attention to detail at this ‘consistently excellent’ enterprise. ‘This is a friendly place, where we’re always made to feel totally welcome by the owners and their team,’ says a regular returnee in 2017. Well-equipped with an espresso machine, organic toiletries and ‘bedside lights you can actually read by’, ‘the immaculately presented bedrooms are very special’. Three have a patio garden, three a roof terrace. ‘And the outdoor pool is perfect, in summer, for the children.’ From the dining room designed to evoke Californian wine country (the host’s passion), watch chef Gavin Barnes at work in the open kitchen. An example of his ‘fantastic’, unfussy cooking: roast New Forest venison, garlic kale, pommes Anna, chestnuts. ‘It certainly pays to ask Gérard to recommend a wine to go with the meal.’ (Claire Clark)
