Good Hotel Guide Review
Awake to the sun rising over the Irish Sea at Chris and Jenny Mullen’s carefree B&B, in an ‘impressive’ Edwardian villa in this seaside resort town. ‘Delightful, attentive’ hosts, the Mullens are well liked for their warmth and ease with guests of all ages (‘our young daughters were made very welcome’). The oak-panelled public areas are full of character: kilim rugs, interesting prints, vintage shop signs, steamer trunks-turned-coffee tables, plenty of books and magazines. Take in the ‘beautiful views’ from deep armchairs set before huge windows. In the jaunty ground-floor Starfish café, mingle with locals who drop in for light lunches and weekend brunches of sweet corn fritters, avocado, lime-chilli crème fraîche. ‘Beautifully appointed, very comfortable’ bedrooms (a ’50s-style lamp here, a collection of antique mirrors there) have sea or garden views. ‘My well-equipped en suite had everything that might’ve been forgotten.’ In the morning, choose from a ‘varied, imaginative’ breakfast menu: local honey, home-baked bread; Copeland Island crab, scrambled egg, chilli jam. On the Mourne Coastal Route; a good base for exploring the Ards peninsula. More reports, please.
