Good Hotel Guide Review

There’s a ‘great atmosphere’ at this privately owned country house spa hotel (Relais & Châteaux), unstintingly luxurious yet completely family friendly. Fifty years strong – with a commemorative book to prove it – it continues to innovate (a purpose-built cookery school and restaurant complex are next on the agenda). ‘The attention to detail is excellent,’ enthuses a reader in 2016. If the sky’s the limit, book a tree-house suite, built on stilts in a secluded forest setting – each suite has floor-to-ceiling windows, a wood-burning stove, a whirlpool tub, a kitchenette, and a breakfast hamper delivered to the door. In the main house, even the cheapest rooms are large, traditionally and lavishly furnished, ‘absolutely pristine, relaxing and very comfy’, says a guest, for whom the whole experience was ‘unreal’. Come hungry: ‘delicious’, sophisticated meals are served in the conservatory dining rooms, perhaps Wiltshire venison saddle, parsley root, sloe gin; line-caught sea bass, mussels, monk’s beard. The estate is on the edge of the New Forest, a stroll from the sea – make your way through ‘beautiful’ grounds for ‘lovely’ walks along the beach. (Aminah Gianfrancesco, Sarah Heineman)

'The staff are first class, it is so refreshing to see good old customer service! It is a total experience of luxury. The rooms are beautiful and the food was to die for. ' - Glynne Pusey - December, 2013
'Staying in one of the new, innovative Tree Houses is wonderful. We have visited the hotel many times but this was different. A safe, peaceful, private and inviting space. You can relax without a care in the world. As a couple you can play Tarzan and Jane. The view from our bed was trees and greenery. Breakfast arrived through a hatch while we slept. All we needed to do was boil a kettle. ' - Natalie Fiorentino - January, 2013
'Attention to detail, courteous staff and a calm atmosphere make this an absolute treat. Our room was luxurious and immaculate. Dinner in the Vitiver restaurant is first class. The newly decorated dining area is split into several sections, offering a variety of atmospheres, from light airy rooms to the more formal feel of the largest dining room. Each visit has been a pleasure. The staff deserve special mention due to their care and attention regarding my dietary requirements. ' - sue pepper - January, 2012
