Good Hotel Guide Review
‘A top-rate example of a pub-with-rooms’, this 18th-century coaching inn (Fuller’s Hotels and Inns) is a warm, characterful spot, all log fires and local ales; old school desks tucked in nooks and crannies; pictures, ale mugs and kitschy breweriana. Jon Howard is the manager; the staff are ‘helpful and friendly’. Well-equipped, individually decorated bedrooms, some with a four-poster bed, are reached via a narrow staircase; others are in a 16th-century building opposite. ‘Mine was above the bar; there was perfectly bearable background noise – only talking, no music – till just after 11 pm.’ Chef Gavin Sinden serves modern British dishes and pub classics in the wood-panelled dining room. ‘Breakfast was excellent, with outstanding local black pudding.’ Bar (local ales), 2 restaurants, 2 function rooms; small patio with seating. Free Wi-Fi (in public areas), in-room TV. No background music. Children over 12, and dogs (in 2 bedrooms; not in restaurant; £7.50 per night) welcomed. Parking. 14 bedrooms (7 in annexe). Per room B&B from £149, D,B&B from £189.
