Good Hotel Guide Review
‘Clearly a popular place’, the Pullan family’s 16th-century coaching inn is well liked for its village atmosphere and the ‘friendly welcome’ extended to locals and tourists. Beams, mounted antlers, country prints and open fires give it a rustic feel: sit in the ‘busy, relaxed’ pub over a local real ale or an option off the interesting pub menu (perhaps twice-cooked short rib of beef, bubble and squeak, claret jus). Each of the ‘country-style’ bedrooms is different. Some have sloping floors, one a 400-year-old fireplace, yet another a ‘comfortable’, ‘shabby-chic’ bed. Rooms in the coach house annexe are quietest. Guests this year urge careful discussion before booking: a small room in the main house, reached via ‘narrow’ stairs, was thought ‘tiny’; a ‘spacious’ four-poster room in the coach house was much preferred. In the beamed restaurant, tables are set with white linens for dinner; modern European dishes might include confit pheasant croquettes, sweet pickled figs, micro herbs. In warmer months, parasols spring up in the large garden, its vista stretching over the South Downs; cocktails and barbecues hit the summer spot.
