Good Hotel Guide Review
Swap the rat race for riverside rambles and woodland walks: the McGown family’s friendly country hotel, in a 17th-century turreted house, is surrounded by large grounds not far from the rivers Tummel and Tay. Sophie McGown is the manager. Tartan and toile de Jouy adorn the cheering, comfortable bedrooms, each thoughtfully supplied with home-baked shortbread and fresh milk. All the rooms are different: one has a peat fire, another a four-poster bed; some are snug, others have a spa bath in a spacious bathroom. In the restaurant, chef Krys Krerowicz focuses on seasonal seafood and game. Outdoorsy guests will find plenty of diversion. Anglers have use of the fishing lodge, with barbecue and cooking facilities, on the River Tay; for stalkers and shooters, days out on nearby estates are regularly arranged. Lounge, bar, restaurant (background music); patio. Free Wi-Fi, in-room TV (Freeview). Civil wedding licence, function facilities. 3-acre grounds; river beat. Parking. Children and dogs (by arrangement, 3 ground-floor rooms have a pooch porch; £10 per night) welcomed. 1½ miles S of town centre. 12 bedrooms (1 suitable for disabled; 5 in a converted ‘bothy’ adjacent to the hotel), plus 2 self-catering cottages. Per room B&B from £110, D,B&B from £160. Closed 1 week over Christmas, open New Year.
