Good Hotel Guide Review

‘Pretty much perfect for country lovers’, this ‘very special’ hotel in the New Forest ‘charms’ with its ‘relaxed’ ambience and ‘excellent’ food. ‘We enjoy the exceptional welcome and service, and sitting in the picturesque garden before dining in the restaurant.’ Settle into the Victorian lounge, ‘well-furnished’ in traditional country house style (oak panelling, a log fire, a grandfather clock); find a spot in the conservatory for ‘delicious’ freshly baked scones with afternoon tea. In the Terrace restaurant overlooking the garden, chef Matthew Tomkinson’s dishes take inspiration from the kitchen garden. Sample modern dishes like ‘lasagne’ of slow-cooked oxtail, celeriac purée; escalope of turbot, sautéed wild mushrooms, braised pearl barley. Informal gatherings, over sophisticated versions of classic pub food, take place in Monty’s Inn (‘heaving on a sunny Sunday’). Individually styled bedrooms, overlooking the garden or Beaulieu Palace, may not be ‘the latest in design’, but are ‘comfortable’ and well equipped. In the morning, freshly brewed tea or coffee may be brought to the room for a very civilised wake-up. (MC) This hotel is a member of Pride of Britain hotels.

Guest comments

'Very special hotel. It doesn't have all the trappings of many larger establishments, and the bedroom and bathroom we choose to have each stay are not the latest in design, and a little cramped, but very comfortable with views of the garden. The public rooms are very country house and well furnished and we enjoy the ambience, the exceptional welcome and service, and to sit in the picturesque garden before dining in the restaurant where the attention and service is so professional but relaxed This along with the New Forest location with all it has to offer for country lovers makes it not far from perfect. 'An impressive Georgian house in an attractive village. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The food was of a high standard with much care lavished on presentation. Service was good, though English was the second language for the largely French staff. ' - Bryan and Mary Blaxall - March, 2013
