Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
In “a splendid position sloping down to Lake Garda”, this fin de siècle mansion was built by a Viennese silk merchant. “A lovely place to stay”, it is run by the Calderan family. Visitors over the past years write: “It is beautiful. The grounds and fabric are meticulously maintained, the staff will bend over backwards to be helpful (the receptionists can do anything in at least four languages), and the view from the terrace where we breakfast and dine is one of the loveliest on the lake.” An earlier correspondent wrote: “Everything first class; high standards of housekeeping.” Reached up a steep, winding road, the hotel has “magnificent interiors and paintings; bags of atmosphere”. The large public rooms have flowery padded chairs, oriental rugs, wood panelling, majolica and statuary. In the gardens are lemon and olive trees, cypresses, sculptures and an abundance of flowers. Almost all the bedrooms share the “wonderful view”: some have a balcony. “Our room, though small, was beautifully decorated.” Another bedroom was “large, with every comfort”. “At dinner they use local ingredients and enjoy recommending local goodies.” “Excellent breakfast: plenty of fresh fruit, good bread.” The “delightful swimming pool” (with bar) is surrounded by loungers; above it is a “fine, slightly neglected temple with sensational views”.
