A formerly run-down pub at the top of the hill overlooking the harbour, this refurbished dining pub with stylish, highly characterful and generously equipped bedrooms, retains the fun and energy of a popular local, while serving seriously impressive, locally sourced food.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
A sea breeze might have blown through the former East Neuk Hotel, on a hilltop above the harbour, so fresh has been its refurbishment as a dining pub with rooms. Reopened in 2022 by Nicholas Frost and Damon Reynolds, it swiftly garnered praise for chef Craig McAllister's culinary flair and use of local ingredients. In a dining room with a palette of orange and teal, parquet flooring and Hans Wegner-style bentwood chairs, a short dinner menu might include BBQ lamb pavé, ‘shepherd’s pie’, hazelnut pesto; Scrabster cod, curried bisque, surf clams; wild mushroom cannelloni, braised fennel, lovage velouté. There is a wider choice at lunch (in the bar, with the dog, if you prefer), with small plates and sandwiches. Bedrooms, opened in 2024, are decorated with panache and have a coffee machine, a mini-fridge, fresh milk, snacks, gin and tonic. The beamed top-floor suite can sleep an extra two children or one adult. Unusual breakfast choices include eggs en cocotte, confit duck leg, truffle, aged Comte, sourdough soldiers. For all its culinary kudos, this remains a lively local. Come by bus from St Andrews. Bring a guitar, or fife, or drums, for Wednesday session nights.
