It is written for the reader seeking impartial advice on finding a good place to stay. Hotels cannot buy their way into the Guide. Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
Forget bed and breakfast and make it wine, bed and breakfast at this gorgeous guest house in Ashley and Tom Fahey's Italianate Victorian villa overlooking the promenade. Expect a 1,000-bottle wine library, bar fridges in the rooms and a complimentary wine tasting each evening. 'Rooms look like they belong in a boutique hotel,' writes our inspector. They mix original features, custom-made wood panelling, modern furniture and art. There are hangars on the wall rather than a wardrobe, a beach towel rather than robes and slippers, and USB ports by the bed. Room 2 has large window seats and a headboard partition separating bedroom from bathroom, Room 3 has an in-room roll-top bath. You can enjoy cheese and charcuterie during the day in the conservatory or the terrace as you admire the sea view. 'Sitting gazing out at the waves, glass in hand, you can feel yourself slipping down the gears into the slow lane.' On Fridays, Tom cooks a no-choice tasting menu of dishes using only Isle of Wight produce. Breakfast is 'a four-course extravaganza, which starts with a sausage roll', (meat or veggie) and ends with 'a minimalist take on the full English'. It sets you up nicely for the walk along the coast to Steephill Cove.
