Aliens landing on this planet might wonder what the obsession with holidays is all about. You have your home, all your possessions, presumably arranged in a way that suits your lifestyle, and you are familiar with your surroundings – so there’s nothing to stress about. So why would you up sticks and leave this domestic haven?

The American writer Ray Bradbury summed up the joys of travelling in the much-quoted saying: “We travel for romance, we travel for architecture, we travel to be lost.”

There is something amazing about discovering a new place – sights, sounds, cultures – perhaps making new friends and spending time sampling new foods, trying out new experiences, and having new adventures. As the saying goes: “Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.”
