The Good Hotel Guide is the leading independent guide to hotels in Great Britain & Ireland, and also covers parts of Continental Europe. The Guide was first published in 1978. It is written for the reader seeking impartial advice on finding a good place to stay. Hotels cannot buy their way into the Guide. The editors and inspectors do not accept free hospitality on their anonymous visits to hotels. All hotels in the Guide receive a free basic listing. A fee is charged for a full web entry.

Yalbury Cottage, which won this year’s César award for best small hotel, is this month’s prize-giving hotel. A conversion of a row of 350-year-old thatched cottages, it is in a small hamlet in a beautiful part of the country, close to Thomas Hardy’s birthplace and his old schoolhouse.
The bedrooms, reached by a mishmash of corridors, have views of gardens or fields. They are decorated in simple, rural style; a large room had ‘pastel colours, pictures on three sides’. Housekeeping is ‘immaculate’. It is run by owners, Ariane and Jamie Jones. His cooking is much admired.
All you need do to win this handsome prize of dinner, bed and breakfast for two at Yalbury Cottage is to send us a review of your favourite hotel or B&B in Great Britain or Ireland. See our competition page for more details. We welcome reports on places that have never been in the Guide or have been omitted, as well as those that have a current entry.
