There are large, light public rooms, a lounge with open fire, a rustic bar, a flowery garden in summer. The best bedrooms ('comfortable rather than luxurious') face south; many have a balcony with 'chocolate box views of the Alps'. 'Our charming room had pine panelling and furniture.' The 'delightful' Frau von Allmen (she is Scottish) produces a five-course set dinner menu with a vegetarian option for the main course, 'always excellent', 'well thought-out', and served by 'particularly pleasant waiting staff'. Vegetarians are catered for. 'The Friday option of fondue bourguignonne has a breathtaking penumbra of sauces.' 'Wide choice' at breakfast, including 'crispy bacon and eggs'. Children are welcomed. Guests are collected by electric bus from the cogwheel railway which climbs up from Lauterbrunnen. Car-free Wengen is one of the prettiest year-round resorts in the Swiss Alps: 'cowbells tinkle everywhere'.
