Owned and managed by Lorenzo Muner, Oltre Il Giardino is set in the San Polo area of Venice, just a few steps from the Church of Frari and 15 minutes from St Mark's Square. Its secluded garden, tranquil location and discreet, friendly service makes it feel more like staying in friend's country house than a hotel. Once the home of Alma Mahler – the famous Viennese socialite and wife to Gustav Mahler – the hotel has just six spacious bedrooms, all uniquely furnished with artworks owned by the family, eclectic antique furniture and brightly coloured bedspreads. They all have a view of the walled garden, where breakfast is served in the summer months; one room on the ground floor has direct access to part of the garden and is ideal for families. There's no restaurant, but plenty of good places nearby; ask the hotel for recommendations.
