The Vega de San Mateo is a protected area in the centre of Gran Canaria island, full of flora and birds, and with farms producing fruit and vegetables. This restored 19th-century manor house is in a hamlet in a fertile valley, 850 metres above sea level. It is now a small rural hotel, warmly nominated this year: “Fantastic, very good food. Original architecture combined with a touch of design.” The bedrooms surround a central courtyard; there is a garden with fruit trees. The owner, Magüi Carratalá, prides himself on the “relaxed atmosphere” and Canarian cooking, and can arrange many outdoor activities.
