The Hare & Hounds

An ideal base from which to visit Highclere (aka Downton Abbey) or to spend a day at the races, this dog-friendly, equestrian-themed gastropub has bedrooms in former outbuildings, including the old stables, a wide-ranging menu of pub classics, grills, and imaginative small and large plates.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
‘If Disney were to design an old village inn, this might be it,’ writes an inspector. ‘Everything is beautifully finished, and young, smiling staff dress the part, with checked shirts and country caps.’ A dog-friendly, equestrian-themed Georgian coaching inn, it is part of Grosvenor Pubs & Inns (see The Stag on the River; Wild Thyme and Honey). Expect hunting-themed fabrics and wallpaper, portraits of military personnel with dogs’ heads, hares’ ears sticking out from lampshades. The bedrooms can be found in outbuildings, including stables incorporating parts of the old stalls, some with small outside seating area. They have ‘thoughtful touches including fresh milk, sloe gin, a Roberts radio and even ear plugs (it’s on a busy road). Bathrooms are sleek and come with Bramley products.’ Flagstones and beams contrast with innovations such as a wine-dispensing machine. In a timber-frame restaurant, dine on ‘posh pub grub’, large and small plates, grills. ‘The pea and asparagus risotto was fresh and tasty.’ When the sun shines, you can eat on the terrace. ‘As somewhere to stay while visiting Highclere (aka Downton Abbey) 10 minutes away, or going to the races at Newbury, this is a great option.’
