Good Hotel Guide Review
‘Warm and familiar’, this country hotel, in ‘a chocolate-box-perfect part of Exmoor’, has been refurbished in a ‘luxurious, contemporary’ style by its owner, Claire Carter. ‘It is wonderfully clean and new inside,’ say Guide inspectors in 2017. ‘And the friendly, welcoming staff really make the place.’ Modern bedrooms vary in size, but all have plush bedlinens and fluffy dressing gowns; a marble bathroom. ‘Our Gatehouse room had a cosy, country-chic feel and all the necessary conveniences. But the loo had a glass door, which we thought rather too intimate.’ The conservatory restaurant is a ‘lovely’ place to sample meals cooked with much Devon produce. Take a wander in the grounds after breakfast: ‘I loved strolling along the banks of the babbling brook, past quirky sculptures and water features, then sitting at one of the outdoor tables to read the complimentary newspapers and drink coffee in the sunshine.’ 2 miles from town centre.
