It is written for the reader seeking impartial advice on finding a good place to stay. Hotels cannot buy their way into the Guide. Ballygally Castle
Ballygally, Co. Antrim
On the Coastal Causeway Route, overlooking Ballygally Bay, this traditional hotel, occupying a much-extended 16th-century castle, is a welcoming, comfortable base from which to tour Game of Thrones countryside.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
On the scenic Coastal Causeway Route in a landscape immortalised by Game of Thrones, this castle was built in 1625 for James Shaw, whose gentle wife, Isabella, is said to haunt it still. Traditionally styled bedrooms have views of sea or countryside; tower rooms off a stone spiral staircase have most character. In an almost baronial restaurant, the menu runs from fish and chips via pastas and curries to dishes such as duck breast with blueberry jus. On your way to breakfast, check the Game of Thrones door depicting the Battle of the Bastards; the reception staff will stamp your ‘Journey of Doors’ passport. The Dark Hedges, aka King’s Road, is an hour’s drive; a Game of Thrones tea awaits on your return.
