Good Hotel Guide Review

True to form for a butler-themed B&B, Paul Smyth, the new owner offers ‘consistently exceptional service’ at this former gentleman’s residence, ‘an easy walk’ from the town centre. The house has been embellished with classic hats and photographs, archival sporting periodicals and candlestick telephone;. Take tea and coffee in the ‘comfortable, well-used’ lounge stocked with newspapers, books and games. ‘Nice touches’ include a shoe-buffing cloth on the landing, and proper stationery in the lounge. ‘Well-appointed’ bedrooms (Jeeves, Hudson, Brabinger, etc) have a radio, a hospitality tray and ironing/pressing facilities. Breakfast (‘too good’) is taken in a high-ceilinged room overlooking the pretty walled garden. The host ‘goes to a lot of trouble to help’ guests seeking advice on local sightseeing or restaurants. 10 mins’ walk to the bus and railway stations. Drawing room, dining room (quiet radio in the morning); ¼-acre garden. Free Wi-Fi, in-room TV (Freeview). Parking. Children over 5 welcomed. 9 bedrooms. Per room B&B single £60–£75, double £85–£120. 2-night min. stay during weekends and festivals.

Guest comments

'A good, quiet location. My room had a comfortable bed and a gleaming bathroom. Furnishings were elegant. Breakfast not the best I have eaten but the cooked dishes were perfectly tasty. Good value for money. ' - Trevor Lockwood - October, 2016
'It is very good. The service is friendly and helpful, the rooms are well appointed, the breakfasts, too, are good, and the public rooms comfortable and well used. If advice is needed on local sight seeing or restaurants, they go to a lot of trouble to help. The hotel is in a fine Regency building with an attractive garden, set in a quiet street and an easy walk to the centre of town. ' - Mark Mackrell - April, 2015
