Good Hotel Guide Review
Deep in Shropshire countryside, Tracey Baylis and Alex Read’s B&B, in a quiet hamlet, is ‘a total joy’, say admirers. Natural materials come to the fore in the extended stone cottage, with bedrooms named Oak, Slate, Clay and Dhustone. Each is different, though all provide shortbread, hot chocolate and herbal infusions on the coffee/tea tray, and organic toiletries in the bathroom. Garden-view Oak, in the older part of the house, has handsome oak beams, plus a sofa bed to accommodate young guests; Clay has a double-ended slipper bath under the bedroom’s sloping ceiling, and French doors that open to a balcony with views of the surrounding fields. On cool days, gather round the wood-burning stove in the open-plan lounge/dining room (the hosts are ready with tea and biscuits); when the weather turns warm, there’s a lawn to play on, and an outdoor eating area. A fuss-free dinner (perhaps lentil and aubergine moussaka; duck breast, red wine, blackcurrants) may be provided by request. Breakfast – a source of pride – is a generous affair: choose among buttered kippers, local sausages, omelettes, organic porridge and more.
