You can order a York Brewery ale or a Pornstar Martini in the bar of this village inn, itself a winning cocktail of the traditional and the modish. A trusted reader sums it up as ‘a fashionable place’ for the well-to-do, ‘to which locals come to eat’. The pub bedrooms are ‘very comfortable’, with a king-size double bed. More ‘wow’, indeed bow-wow, are dog-friendly Garden Rooms, set around a landscaped garden, each with private terrace and views over the Vale of Mowbray. They have a super-king-size bed, plush seating, perhaps a working fireplace. Some rooms interconnect; all have a minibar, fluffy towels, robes, H2K toiletries. Tracy Cooper’s menus range from pub classics and sharing boards to such ‘first-rate’ dishes as rack of Yorkshire lamb, confit rosemary shallot, dauphinoise potato, spring cabbage, red wine reduction. Owners Provenance Inns place heavy emphasis on sourcing locally. Fruit and vegetables and cut flowers are from a garden above the village.
