VisitEngland Four Star Country House Hotel
Good Hotel Guide Review
Let the hillside setting and leafy copses around this Victorian country house capture the imagination – they inspired Beatrice Potter to pen the adventures of her many woodland creatures. Some of the well-appointed bedrooms have views of Lake Windermere past the trees and sweeping lawns; two, on the ground floor, have direct access to the garden. Books and board games in the sitting room are just the ticket on rainy days. In good weather, take afternoon tea on the sun terrace or strike out further afield: good walks start from the door. Come evening, modern British dishes in the candlelit dining room might include salad of goat’s cheese pearls, beetroot, granola; lamb cutlet and rump, wild forest mushrooms, smoked celery cream fondant.
Exhibitions about 1066, alongside an aquarium, museum and two popular theatres.
