Linthwaite House
Bowness-On-Windermere, Cumbria
The South African Leeu Collection's Edwardian country house in wooded, landscaped grounds above Windermere is a haven of civilised living, with casual and fine dining options, woodland hot-tub suites, and views to take the breath away.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
A serene hilltop oasis overlooking Windermere yet just a five-minute drive from bustling Bowness, this much-extended Edwardian country house lies in wooded, landscaped grounds. A palette of soft blue, pumpkin and slate is designed not to upstage the views of distant fells and shimmering water. Sculptures inside and out, artworks by South African artists, leopard and zebra fabric prints and the scent of TheraNaka botanical candles hint at the origins of owner Analjit Singh’s Leeu Collection. Rooms range from compact classic doubles, with shower, to luxury with hot tub and private terrace, and Scandi-style hot-tub suites in leafy seclusion, a stroll or golf-buggy ride away. You can eat and drink from an all-day menu in the bar and conservatory, which spills out onto the terrace (maybe oxtail fritter, barley risotto, lobster roll). In Simon Rogan’s Henrock restaurant, chefs use produce from Mr Rogan’s Cartmel Valley farm or locally foraged in dishes such as roasted root, liver parfait, rowan berry; confit Herdwick lamb shoulder, Lisbon onion, pine-infused lamb sauce. After breakfast you might row on the private tarn – don’t be spooked by Dylan Lewis’s realistic ‘Striding Tiger’. Afternoon tea on the terrace is bliss.
