Good Hotel Guide Review

In the Langdale valley, Mark and Ruth Jones’s country hotel is a family affair: daughter Aimee is the ‘charming’ manager; son Edward cooks ‘delicious’ modern European recipes in the restaurant. The 18th-century house stands in green grounds with ‘stunning views’ over Elter Water. Within, there is a ‘traditional country atmosphere’ from the ‘comfortable’ public rooms to the individually decorated bedrooms. Plenty of walks start from the front door – with the promise of tea and cake in the bar or garden when you return. 2 miles from Grasmere; the Langdale Pikes rise in the distance.

Guest comments

'This historic e building was the home of the founder of the gunpowder industry in the area. Interesting decor and pictures. Comfortable lounges. Pretty garden; stunning views. The food was excellent: nicely served and presented. There is contemporary music, a bit of a black mark but not too much of a bother. There was the option of eating in the bar, which is quite noisy. Good wine list but a bit expensive. Tasty chocolates afterwards. The staff were very helpful. The bedroom was a bit small but the roll-top bath was too deep, hard to get in and out.
