Good Hotel Guide Review
Protected from the border’s lawless raiders by a 16th-century ‘bastle’, Elaine Packer’s ‘superb’ Georgian farmhouse overlooking Hadrian’s Wall near Birdoswald, is full of ‘every comfort’. Proper tea and home-made cake, taken by the drawing room fire or in the ‘beautiful’ walled garden, welcome arriving guests. Shutters at the windows promise a sound night in the traditionally decorated bedrooms; ‘sumptuously styled’, each is well supplied with glossy magazines, cafetière coffee, a biscuit barrel and chocolates. ‘So peaceful.’ Ordered the night before, breakfast features ‘delicious’ home-cooked Northumbrian fare; the ‘gigantic portions’ are just the thing for hikers and bikers setting off for the day. Packed lunches available (£6).
