Good Hotel Guide Review
Come teatime, guests arriving at Elaine Packer’s farmhouse B&B are welcomed with hot drinks and home-made cake. The Georgian building, which overlooks Hadrian’s Wall near Birdoswald, is filled with ‘every comfort’: its traditionally decorated bedrooms are supplied with glossy magazines, bathrobes, freshly ground cafetière coffee, a biscuit barrel and chocolates. On cool days, browse the library by the wood-burning stove; when the weather’s fine, sit in the ‘beautiful’ walled garden and watch the light change over the North Pennines and the Lakeland fells beyond. ‘So peaceful.’ Ordered the night before, breakfast brings ‘gigantic portions’ of home-cooked Northumbrian fare. Packed lunches available (£6).
