Good Hotel Guide Review
Narrow country lanes lead to the D’Allen family’s hotel in sub-tropical gardens overlooking Lyme Bay. Within the Georgian manor house, comfortable leather settees sit on colourful Persian-style carpets amid ‘an eclectic assortment of artefacts’: Victorian paintings in heavy gold frames, sculpted elephants and rabbits, a classical Greek statue. Most striking of all: the ‘impressive view’ from the terrace and gardens, over the trees to the sea, say Guide inspectors in 2017. Bedrooms vary in size and decor; most have views of the bay. Some have a private outdoor hot tub; all have a ‘state-of-the-art bathroom’ stocked with ‘generous towels and first-class goodies’. Dinner is ‘delicious’: ‘perfectly cooked’ scallops and lobster Thermidor, perhaps, or monkfish and pancetta to ‘go into raptures over’. ‘Delightful desserts’, too. 4½ miles N of Torquay.
