The Good Hotel Guide is the leading independent guide to hotels in Great Britain & Ireland, and also covers parts of Continental Europe. The Guide was first published in 1978. It is written for the reader seeking impartial advice on finding a good place to stay. Hotels cannot buy their way into the Guide. Sentry Mead Hotel
Isle Of Wight
A turreted Victorian summer villa, this B&B with the feel of a luxury hotel is praised by our inspector for its attention to detail and smart, generously supplied bedrooms.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
The well-to-do flocked to the Isle of Wight when Queen Victoria built Osborne, her holiday home, from which this turreted 19th-century villa is a 30-minute drive. Run by ‘amenable’ managers Gayle and Mark Craven, who also manage the Albion (see entry), this B&B impressed our inspector 'with the feel and attention to detail of a luxurious hotel' as well as 'superb value'. Bedrooms have a king-size or super-king bed and are supplied with homemade goodies and a pillow menu while bathrooms have underfloor heating, de-misting mirrors, Elemis toiletries. ‘If you run out of fresh milk, there's more on the landing, along with a posh coffee machine.’ Ventnor room has a sea view, a large walk-in shower enclosure within the tower. ‘Pick of the bunch’, dual-aspect Alum has a separate seating area with table and sofa, a large shower and a sea view from the bed. Downstairs you'll find an honesty bar, a sitting room with games, a conservatory leading to the 'lovely garden', and a dining room where guests can bring in takeaways, while The Rock restaurant at the Albion is just minutes away. Take the dog: there are superb walks from the door to Alum Bay and Tennyson Down, and treats and towels on your return.
