Good Hotel Guide Review
Come in to log fires and local ales at this 18th-century coaching inn (Fuller’s Hotels and Inns) between the cathedral and the medieval college. A warm, characterful place, it is a ‘top-rate example of a pub-with-rooms’. The walls in the bar are lined with pictures, ale mugs and kitschy breweriana; old school desks, tucked into nooks, create cosiness. Jon Howard manages ‘helpful, friendly staff’. Feast on modern British dishes and pub classics in the wood-panelled dining room, then retire to one of the well-equipped, individually decorated bedrooms (some up a narrow staircase). ‘Perfectly bearable’ chatter from the pub stops around 11 pm, but light (and early) sleepers may wish to discuss room options. An ‘excellent’ breakfast includes ‘outstanding’ local black pudding.
