Good Hotel Guide Review
In the ‘tranquil grounds’ of the UNESCO-designated World Heritage site, this hotel, part of a modern complex, ‘fits in well’ with the medieval cathedral and its surroundings. The ‘cheerful staff’ and ‘prime position’ combine to make it a ‘very special place’, Guide readers say. ‘It was a singular privilege to wander round the precincts late in the evening, after the day visitors had left.’ Bedrooms are simply furnished but are ‘comfortable and well-equipped, with an efficient shower room’ (‘shame about the captive hangers and poor bedside lighting, however’). Ask for a cathedral-view room and wake to the sight of the ecclesiastical building – ‘bliss’. Breakfast has a ‘small buffet’; hot dishes are ‘well served in the busy refectory’. Eat alfresco on the terrace when weather permits. At dinner, guests have discounts at several local eateries, ‘many within easy walking distance’.
