Good Hotel Guide Review
Five minutes’ walk from Hastings Contemporary, this Georgian rectory-turned-B&B provides a showcase for the works of artists from Hastings and St Leonard’s. It is owned by designer Lionel Copley, who also co-owns Swan House, Hastings (next entry) with his partner, Brendan McDonagh. As you would expect, then, the public rooms are stylish, with rugs on sanded floorboards, pale paint finishes and bespoke wallpapers. Meanwhile, the bedrooms have a muted palette. Nice touches include home-made biscuits, fresh milk and Lionel’s Made by the Sea toiletries. Street-facing Ebenezer has a deep grey wall hung with Wedgwood calendar plates. A private corridor leads to All Saints, overlooking the garden, with hand-printed Deborah Bowness floral wallpaper and hand-painted headboard, a bathroom with freestanding claw-footed bath and a wet room. Rob Hills cooks a locally sourced breakfast, with organic apple juice, free-range eggs, kippers and smoked haddock from Rock-a-Nore Fisheries, home-made sausages, bread and preserves. The walled garden is tended by Zeline Dupraz, who has worked at Great Dixter and Sissinghurst.
