The Bull & The Pear Tree Inn
Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk
A Victorian village pub, The Bull has a new lease of life at the centre of the community, with food well above average gastropub standards, and smart, lavishly equipped bedrooms at The Pear Tree, a converted Georgian farmer's cottage.
Good Hotel Guide Review
The hotel experts at the Good Hotel Guide
October 2020 was not the greatest time to buy a defunct boozer, but pals Ben Davenport and Sam Darling used lockdown to restore this Victorian pub to the heart of the village. Following the conversion of 16th century cum Victorian farmers' cottages into The Pear Tree Inn, it is now ‘a charming and attractive country retreat’, reports our inspector. Each room has a private entrance, parking, a minibar, coffee machine, artisan toiletries and all manner of tech. The Williams Suite had ‘plenty of character, original beams, a cosy sitting room with log burner, a shower room, a large copper bath in the upstairs bedroom’. The high-ceilinged, accessible Seckel suite has a wet-room shower and in-room brass bath. The scrupulously sourced menus mix imaginative dishes with a spin on pub classics. ‘Dinner at The Bull was comfortably above typical gastropub standards. Guinness and black treacle soda bed was excellent, gazpacho imaginative and beautifully plated seabass perfectly cooked.’ Given notice, the enthusiastic kitchen team are happy to create ad hoc tasting menus. An ‘impressive’ breakfast brought top-notch eggs royale. Quiz nights, pie and pud nights, summer barbecues and live music in the large garden create a buzz.
