Good Hotel Guide Review
A handy stopover for trips to and from Scotland, this restaurant-with-rooms is liked for its ‘fantastic service’, ‘excellent food’, ‘well-equipped, modern bedrooms’ and ‘great value for money’. It is owned by chef/patron John Topham and his wife, Claire. After a drink by the fire in the cocktail lounge, sit in the stylishly updated restaurant (low beams, stone walls, leather chairs) for a ‘first-rate’ meal, perhaps including slowly braised sticky pig’s cheek, pulled ham hock, pea velouté; Yorkshire fish pie with a Wensleydale crust. Head to one of the ‘comfortable’ bedrooms afterwards – each has home-made biscuits and high-end toiletries. The medieval ruins of Knaresborough Castle are close by.
